Which web design company should you choose?

Choosing which web design company you are going to go with is a massive decision to make. When you choose the web design company to create your website you are putting the reputation of your business and the way people perceive you in the hands of someone else. Not to mention handing them your hard earned cash, so you have to be careful.

Different web design companies have different skills, different programs they use and different methods of using them, and it’s certainly not a “one size fits all” when it comes to finding the correct designer-customer combination. We have encountered endless business owners who have taken the wrong decision when choosing a web company, and ended up out of pocket, coming to us to fix a website which isn’t fit for use.

Luckily though there are plenty of success stories too, and to make sure there are more of those, we present you with our list of things that you should always consider when choosing a web design company to separate the good guys from the bad guys.

step1

Do They Have The Right Experience?

Try to find the following to see what their skills are and whether they appear to be positioned correctly to tackle your project

  • Have they done previous work in your industry? or…
  • Can they adapt to different industries?
  • Do they have testimonials from business owners similar to yourself?
  • Are they willing to work with a new or existing industry?

step2

Do They Offer Comprehensive Support?

Many business owners who have a new website designed often get left in the dark about how their new website operates, leaving them to figure it out for themselves. Try to find out about how the company work and what they offer after a website has been made live.

  • Do they offer training after the project is complete?
  • Are they just after money or do they maintain a relationship with their clients?
  • Do they offer marketing and continued support?

step3

Does The Web Design Company Actually Do The Work Themselves?

This may sound like a strange one, but unfortunately its depressingly common. Companies who present themselves as real, highly skilled, hard working web design professionals actually don’t do any work on your project at all, and it’s actually outsourced by them to workers in India, China and other countries far away from you. Why is this important?

  • If your website breaks or you have a query about it you may not be able to get the issue resolved straight away, or at all as the company you employed never actually designed or built the website.
  • If you employ a web design agency that prides of doing their work in house, then you can avoid all of that, and always be sure that if anything goes wrong, they’re just a phone call away.

step4

Have They Got The Skills?

People are often blinded in their judgement by low prices and promises that they choose any so called “web designer” who “works” in their bedroom, rather than an established web design company. There are so many people out there who read/watch a 15 minute tutorial on how to design a website and then suddenly think they can pass themselves off as a web designer. The end result when choosing these people is often an unappealing, buggy and low quality website which leaves an everlasting poor impression of your business to customers. Ways you can prevent this;

  • Have a look at some of their past work, if it all looks tacky, and looks as if they follow the same pattern, then the odds are your website is going to go much the same way as all of the rest
  • Find out how long they have been in the web design business, do they have longevity or are they likely to disappear soon?
  • Test existing sites they have created, for example do they load fast, are they mobile/tablet friendly and do they look professional?

Still confused about which web design company to choose?Choose Dijitul

Cloud accounting, is it time you made the switch?

Cloud Accounting SupermanFor many small businesses, bookkeeping and credit control can be a total nightmare. More commonly for those who run their own online shop but also sell their products over the counter. Many business owners still use stand-alone systems such as Sage Line 50 which runs from the old PC in the corner that no one but the accountant dares turn on.

A few years ago we decided to move away from a stand alone system and explored the cloud accounting world. Since then, we’ve not looked back. Here are five things that made us move, could you do the same?

  1. Real time information, at your finger tips – Using cloud accounting will give you access to real time data, so at any point you will know the exact financial position of your business. From what you owe out to how much VAT you owe to Mr Cameron and his constituents. This is invaluable information and in today’s world I feel it’s crucial to have access to this. Having such information will allow you to be more efficient and plan better.
  2. Flexibility – Cloud accounting allows you to run your business from anywhere in the world. Most platforms now support mobile devices and tablets allowing you to invoice on the go.  KashFlow, a platform that we have used for quite some time now actually features automatic credit control which means that you do not need to carry out the mundane task of chasing your clients for money, simply let the system send out an email two days before the payment is due and others if the payment is not received. It’s amazing just how effective this can be.
  3. Save money – Going on personal experience, we save approximately £3000.00 a year by using cloud accounting. Day to day bookkeeping can be carried out in-house by practically any member of the team. Our VAT returns are automatically created and submitted in the press of a button.
  4. Efficiency – You can quite easily integrate your cloud accounting package with an online shop or EPOS system, practically giving you one system to run your business. Just think about that for a second, just how efficient could you become?
  5. Superman like powers – Although we cannot prove this, there are rumors saying that certain cloud accounting users have acquired superman like powers after having the weight of bookkeeping lifted off their shoulders. For me personally, KashFlow was my Kryptonite and when I’m not out saving the world, I’m running my business more efficiently and can now sleep like a small puppy dog.

So, as you can see, it was a good move for us. Could you do the same within your business and receive the same rewards? I think so….

To find out more about Cloud Accounting and how we can help implement this into your business, website or online shop please do not hesitate to get in touch with me on 01623 650333 or simply drop me an email.

Alternatively, you can find out more about the platform that we use on the KashFlow website.

Google Plus, a social network that many just don’t understand.

Gplus-logoGoogle Plus is a social networking site or as Google describe it a “social layer”. Unlike other social media platforms Google Plus features an authorship tool that creates a link between content and it’s author. Google+ was initially launched in June 2011 for testing but was soon suspended due to an overwhelming response for invites. On 20th September 2011 Google+ opened it’s doors and became available to everyone above the age of 13.

Google Plus has grown at a rapid rate and now boasts over 550 million users worldwide, an impressive figure for a platform that most just didn’t get from the start. Users in the USA seem to love it and have made full use of the platform, the UK I still feel has yet to fully engage and realise just how beneficial it can be. I have spoken to hundreds of people about it and most simply say “I just don’t get it.”

I recently spoke with Jason Dexter, a friend of mine and a freelance SEO expert. We regularly discuss SEO issues and share knowledge regarding digital marketing,  Jason commented, “Google+ is a platform that allows content creators and website owners to verify the articles they’ve made, the websites they work on and use that authorship value to pass onto websites they work with. So instead of benefiting a whole domain because of it’s value, regardless of who writes on there, it’s used to give value to each author. If I have a website that has 100 high quality authors, each one working on multiple websites within my industry, I’ll get a huge *boost* from Google. If I’m using low quality writers that write for every industry going, then I’m not going to get the same value. This is Google’s attempt to give benefits to each author.”

That pretty much sums up Google+ and should give you a good enough reason to start using it. We have seen some fantastic results and are now creating more engaging content which is seeing a higher click through rate.

I recently wrote an article called Which SEO Company to give companies a guide on how to find the right company.

This now sits nicely at the number one spot, no link building was carried out, just a good bit of content linked to my Google Plus account, it’s been shared a few times via social media but nothing crazy.

Create good content, leverage this content via Google Plus and you’re onto a winner. What is more likely to be clicked? Plain looking content or content that shows an image of a real person and a face to your business? I know what I would click first.

To find out more about Google Plus or to sign up please visit: https://plus.google.com/

If you would like more advice about the platform please feel free to connect with me or simply give me a call on 01623 650333. My Google Plus profile can be found here: https://plus.google.com/+DaveHartshorne/

Google Keyword Planner has recently replaced the popular Adword Keyword Tool

Google have combined the functionality of their keyword tool and traffic estimator in order to make it easier to plan your search campaigns. The improved platform will allow you to find new keyword ideas and implement a more strategic search campaign.

Various things have changed within the tool such as no match type data for search volume, no device targeting AND local and global monthly has been merged into “Average monthly searches”.

These changes are not only designed to “put everything under one roof” so to speak, but also to streamline the whole keyword targeting procedure, and make everything a lot easier for the searcher, business owner, or web master. Choosing the correct keywords to target is one of the very first, yet most important stages of any online marketing campaign – target the wrong keywords and you may well end up wasting months and getting nowhere, or getting yourself ranking highly for a term which is irrelevant to your website and in turn does not convert any of your traffic into sales.

On the face of things, this transition seems to be very much a positive thing, as it will end any confusion when it comes to keyword selection, and also allow us to get a much better idea of what is and what isn’t going to work when it comes to choosing keywords for any online marketing campaign we carry out.

You can find out more about the new Keyword planner over at the Google Support Centre.

Which SEO company should you choose?

Which SEO company, that’s a question we’ve heard more than once. Here is a quick guide about choosing your SEO company. You may wonder why a company that offers SEO would write this. Well, we understand that not everyone wishes to put all their eggs in one basket and use the company that developed their website for marketing. We often inherit poorly optimised sites and have heard many SEO horror stories. So, without further adieu, please find below my guide to choosing the right SEO company.

Which SEO Company

Have the SEO company analysed your website?

If the SEO company are experienced in getting good results then the first stage is for them to thoroughly scan your website checking page titles, descriptions, the density of keywords and a number of other factors which determine your sites position in search engines.
A free website review is crucial and will determine exactly what work needs carrying out and just how much it will cost you. This review is something any SEO company should provide you with at no cost.

Have they looked at your competitors taking note of their linking strategies?

If you are working with a reputable SEO company then you should expect to receive a competitors report which shows you exactly what your competition is doing and helps the company to achieve a much better rank for your website.

Does your SEO company have their own in-house link builders?

Good quality links are crucial when it comes to search engine optimisation so you have to ensure that you choose the right SEO company. Finding high ranking, valuable and resourceful links can sometimes be a long process as each one needs to be individually researched and placed. Unfortunately in the SEO industry there are companies who bulk buy links, use link farms and some don’t actually do anything other than take your money, avoid these at all costs.

Which SEO company will give you a return on your investment?

Companies invest time and money into their SEO as the ROI tends to be quite high, once you get onto page one for your chosen terms you should expect to see an increase in traffic and even sales. If you would like to join one of the many successful online businesses then we strongly recommend you invest some serious time into search engine optimisation. A small investment of a few hundred pounds will not give you the results you need nor will bulk buying seventy five links from that offshore SEO company that called you seven times last week, think about it this way, you could not rent a shop on a busy high street for a few hundred pounds a month could you?

Still confused about which SEO company to choose?

Why not give us a call and arrange a free, informal chat about your current website and lets see if we can help turn your online business into an online success story. Alternatively you can click here, for a free website review from our digital marketing team.

Although there is no quick, overnight solution to achieving high rankings on the search engines it is possible and you can get a good return on your investment, if you work with the right SEO company, of course!

The nightmare of getting bad links removed from the web!

I thought I would share some thoughts with you all about link cleansing, following a recent nightmare we have had.

Fixing a website, hit by various Google algorithm updates

We have recently taken over an old website that used to rank really well for a number of competitive keywords, driving sales of around £180,000 a year. Over the years the site has been hit by various Google penalties as the previous company used an automated reciprocal link / link exchange program which many years ago, actually worked!

Nowadays, getting your website ranking highly is not so simple but at the same time, most of it’s common sense. Good content, natural links, users sharing your site, positive feedback, a good social media strategy mixed with lots of good content and you’re onto a winner. As you can imagine, over the years websites attract hundreds if not tens of thousands of links, some natural, some placed manually and some that may have been scraped from the web and placed into a random links page. The problem we have to overcome is how do we deal with these links and how do we get the ones that harm our sites removed from the web?

Disavow

How do you get these links removed?

Firstly, we have to contact the site owner, a lot of these sites are out of date, have no contact details on them and really, should probably be removed from the internet. People set up websites, populate them and for some reason just leave them, maybe find another hobby or their circumstances change and they forget all about their website. What this leaves is a network of badly written websites with bad content linking to us or in fact our clients and normally results in some form of penalty.

If you do manage to find the webmaster’s details and email them, they are not obliged to reply, most times they just don’t and you’re left with a link on a website that you really do not want.

Google Disavow Tool

When links cannot possibly be removed there is Google Disavow, which allows you to submit a list of websites that have your links on, telling Google to ignore them. We have found this extremely useful and recommend that anyone running their own website or online shop takes a look at the links that point to their website and spend some time link cleansing. I can guarantee that you will have links that you did not know about, some maybe actually affecting your search engine optimisation, take the time to check it out, you won’t regret it!

Digital Mansfield – Di – ji – tul

Web Design MansfieldWe sometimes get asked why we called Dijitul what we did and why we do not spell the word correctly. We also have to think about what so many people may search for if they heard our name being mentioned; Digital Media, Digital Mansfield or Digital Web Design Mansfield.

If you say Dijitul out loud you will see that actually “Digital” hypothetically speaking is incorrect.

Dij – i – tul  | Dig i tal – say it out loud and you will see what we mean.

Since we launched the business back in 2006 we have grown our client base purely by word of mouth and reputation and have not heavily relied on traffic from search engines. Being busy working for our clients our own search engine placements have not been so important.

Dijitul has become a recognised brand within the web design industry and is much more than just “another web design company”. Thanks to the products we have developed and custom applications our name has been spread all over the world and has always got the people talking. Most this is down to us providing a top class service and customer loyalty but also our name stands out and is always a talking point.
